Apparently the word is out that a serial killer targeting women in Philadelphia is on the loose. The first victim was found Nov. 3, the most recent victim was found this past weekend. The New York based group the Guardian Angels arrived yesterday in Philly to help in the hunt of the serial killer and to help residents who are afraid to walk the streets. They also will serve as a liaison between the police and residents, forwarding tips to authorities. Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Angels said the group would provide evening patrol shifts until a suspect is arrested.
Last month the bodies of four women were discovered in Long Island, NY. Police in New York suspect also he work of a serial killer. What do all these cases have in common? All the victims are prostitutes.
One reporter said that cases of missing prostitutes don’t capture public or the police attention until a serial killer might be to blame. If one prostitute is killed nobody cares he said, the woman is usually blamed and the majority of folks say is a risk she took when she choose that lifestyle.
Sadly, the police interest is usually not the young women victims, they are more interested when the possibility that a serial killer might be to blame. There is a morbid fascination in our society with serial killers.
It is possible people want to know why they are so different from somewhat “normal” people. Or maybe they think that if we are able to know and understand what motivated them to do such thing we will be able to prevent this kind of thing to happen in the future.
The truth of the matter is that even though these women might not always made good choices, there is someone out there who loved them and will miss them.
