Felicidades, Feliz Navidad and a Happy New Year!!!!
In 2004, a few days after the tsunami hit Indonesia, I was sitting at Kahului airport in Maui waiting to board the plane to Philadelphia. I remember wearing my barefoot beach sandals and smiling because I didn’t have to remove my shoes going thru the airport scanner. It was my second trip to Hawaii that year, I wished I could’ve stayed.
Traveling have changed a lot since 9-11. Do you remember what it was like to travel without so many restrictions and scanning devices? Have you seen the new airport body scanners? The other day a traveler in San Diego International Airport refused to submit to a full body scan. He claimed some health concerns and also an invasion to his privacy. He opted for the traditional metal scanner, but also refused to submit to a “groin check”. He even told the TSA security guard, “you touch my junk and I am going to have you arrested”. I forgot to mention he had turned his cell camera on and recorded the whole incident. He was prohibited from boarding his flight, escorted out the airport and now he is being threaten with a $10, 000 dollar fine.
Are you aware that these new body scanners provide an image of your naked body? Other passengers have reported invasive “pat-downs” that felt like sexual assaults when TSA employees reached inside women’s bras and felt their buttocks. An airline pilots union is advising its members to opt out of the (AIT) Advanced Imaging Technology scanners because of concern of radiation. Even thought scanner images are supposed to be immediately deleted, about 35,000 images had been kept on a scanner in Orlando, Florida and 100 of them were posted in a blog on the internet.
So what happens when would be terrorists choose another method, for example inserting bombs in their body cavities? Ooopps, I forgot, it already happened. Check out this link (HERE), and you will read about suicide bomber Abdullah Hassan Tali al-Asiri. In 2009 he attempted to kill a Saudi prince by detonating explosives hidden in his anus to avoid detection.
So if you thought removing your shoes and belt at the airport was tough, think again.

Saludos!
